Humphrey Fellow Vera-Cruz at UNICEF's Innovation Unit

"I have completed half of my professional affiliation time with UNICEF’s Innovation Unit. It has been an amazing experience to work with such an interdisciplinary team of individuals around the world tasked with identifying, prototyping, and scaling technologies and practices that strengthen UNICEF’s work. The Innovation Unit has been building and scaling innovative products that improve children’s lives around the world.

I have been working with the database model of one of the most successful innovative products that the unit has, called RapidPro. The application powers the way governments and development partners connect, engage and collaborate directly with the most important (and often most marginalized) voices in their communities – those who have not been able to seek or voice information and concerns. Designed for program experts, RapidPro is distinct from similar platforms in that it’s a free and open source software with built-in features tailored to the international development context.

During the Professional affiliation I will continue working with RapidPro supporting the early stages of developing a database sandbox system and API to manage diverse country-level data sources, with a specific focus on U-Report data, along with geographic, population, and other relevant data."
