Darfur is Dying: Playing with Genocide

Presented by: Lauren van der Rede, Department of English, University of the Western Cape

Abstract: Darfur is Dying is a simulation style video game which markets itself as a “game for change”, that offers players the opportunity to learn about what it asserts is the “genocide in Darfur”. Through a critical engagement with the tropes deployed as part of the representational style of Darfur is Dying, this paper attempts to bring into conversation video game and film, and to think what it is about play, specific to the medium of the video game, that permits the aforementioned assertion to be made.
