The Voice and the Speaker: On the Resonance of Social History

Presented by: Aidan Erasmus, Department of History, University of the Western Cape

Abstract: This paper examines the work of the voice and the speaker as technologies of the sonic that resonate with the work of history. It attempts specifically to think through aurality as it emerges in South African historiography, and asks whether the modalities of truth, speaking, and voice that texture social history are related to those that permeate the discourse of testimony that is found in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa.
