Director of Operations

Building Tomorrow, Inc, an international social-profit organization uniting communities and
individuals in support of access to quality education in East Africa invites interested individuals to
apply for our Director of Operations position.

Building Tomorrow is a fast-growing organization and with current funding and growth targets,
requires someone who can manage multiple staff areas in more than one office. It is essential this
person be a self-starter with the ability to manage Ugandan operations, implementation of the
organization’s current Educate51k initiative and more. Our ideal candidate has a strong
understanding of financial statements to allow development of budgets and financial systems.
Additionally, our ideal candidate has at least five years of experience in a management position,
possesses excellent writing and financial skills, confidence in leading a growing team,
communicates clearly, has energy and passion for our mission, a great sense of humor and looks
forward to deepening Building Tomorrow’s impact. To succeed in this leadership role, one must be
comfortable working across a variety of cultures and enthusiastic about on-the-ground travel and
interaction.

THE ORGANIZATION
Started in 2006, Building Tomorrow currently works with a wide range of institutional funders to
support investment in access to quality education throughout rural Uganda with an eye for
expansion in sub-Saharan Africa. With a full-time staff of 65 working in the United States and
Uganda, Building Tomorrow has commenced or completed construction of 58 schools, providing
safe classroom space for nearly 10,000 students. Building Tomorrow’s Fellowship program has
continued to grow and today has 40 Fellows working in 160 schools throughout Uganda. Building
Tomorrow has received funding and recognition for its innovative work from the Clinton Global
Initiative, Echoing Green, the Segal Family Foundation, and Forbes Magazine. For more

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE
Strategy Implementation
• Oversees daily operations of organization and coordinates activities of multi-country
leadership team.
• Ensures execution of on-the-ground programming in conjunction with stated goals,
priorities shared with stakeholders and donors.
• Manages, guides and mentors Building Tomorrow’s growing team, positioning individuals
and organization for strong growth.
• Establishes and monitors staff performance goals, objectives and accountability.

Financial Oversight
• Oversees, reviews and maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally
Accepted Accounting Principles, and monitors the use of all funds.
• Oversees organization-wide budgeting, including the annual development and
implementation of budgets, monitor progress, report variances, and present operational
metrics both internally and externally.
• Coordinates all audit activities, oversight of the US 990 tax return, and other filings.
• Responsible for internal control policies and procedures related to accounting and financial
matters.
• Maintains and prepares financial reports for board meetings, donors and senior staff.
• Serves as liaison to board audit/finance committee.
• Manages all banking and investment advisor relationships.

Program Evaluation
• Partners with the Chief Dreamer and other management and board members on all
operational and strategic issues as necessary, responsible for providing financial analysis and
projections, cost identification and revenue/expense analysis.
• Partners with organization leadership to align financial management with short and longterm
program goals, metrics, and individual accountabilities.
• Oversees the preparation and timely distribution of periodic reports to donors, stakeholders
and other organizational partners.
• Develops and implements system for tracking, measuring and reporting Building
Tomorrow’s success in implementing programmatic work.

YOUR SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or other relevant degree.
• Intrepreunrial mindset focused on innovation, creative solutions, converting ideas into
successful outcomes.
• Politically savvy, able to navigate organizationally to get things done with maximum benefit.
• Experience building systems, processes and staff to profitably scale business.
• Financial fluency gained through direct financial and accounting management/oversight.
• Effective leader and developer of highly engaged and productive staff.
• Extremely articulate, possessing superior English written and oral communication skills.
• Comfortable with and willing to travel/live globally, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

COMPENSATION
Compensation will be commensurate with experience. Health insurance will be included and
other benefits, depending on location, may be available. This position will be based in Indianapolis,
Indiana or Kampala, Uganda, to be determined with the chosen candidate. The position will report
to the Chief Dreamer and work closely with the Country Director.

2. Manages Building Tomorrow’s vision and purpose to motivate staff and stakeholders to ensure
a sense of core purpose and focused activity to achieve desired results.
3. Produce competent work deliverables for the Chief Dreamer and Board to achieve desired
mission results.
4. Effectively manage and develop high performing engaged staff.
