Job Description
One Acre Fund's goal is to have a dollar impact on the lives of smallholder farmers. Our core program has proven that we can have a deep impact on the farm families we work with, and our number of clients is growing all the time. The Government Relations and Policy department closely supports the New Country Expansion team to scout and pilot the One Acre Fund model in new countries. The Expansion Analyst will support these efforts, ensuring all registration and regulatory requirements are fulfilled efficiently and thoroughly, in close consultation with the Policy and Expansion Manager.
In addition to this primary responsibility, the Expansion Analyst will also contribute when possible to One Acre Fund policy activities. Policy engagement provides an additional opportunity for us to change farmer’s lives. Government policies have the potential to reach millions of farmers at a single go, and help shape successful economies. One Acre Fund wants to leverage its extensive field experience to help East African governments implement agricultural policies that are of tangible benefit to smallholder farmers.
The position will have the following responsibilities:
  • New Country Expansion Support – 70%
    • With Policy and Expansion Manager, analyze political, regulatory, and operational landscapes in countries selected for early stage scouting.
    • Produce written briefs with targeted recommendations for new countries of operations.
    • With Legal Analyst, produce recommendations on regulatory, registration, and operational considerations for new countries.
    • Create and execute government relations strategy in new countries with support of New Country scouts.
    • Create and refine templates and tools to standardize government relations needs in new markets.
    • Travel to new countries to support government relations efforts including applications for registration, licenses, permits and other start-up administrative needs.
  • Policy Analysis – 20%
    • Research and analyze policy issues at local, national, and regional levels affecting the agricultural sector across One Acre Fund countries of operation.
    • Work with Policy and Expansion manager to identify opportunities for One Acre Fund to influence policy in ways that benefit smallholder farmers.
    • Create white papers, briefing documents, and public advocacy materials for selected policy objectives.
    • Work with government relations teams in One Acre Fund countries to support analysis and monitoring and evaluation of ongoing policy projects.
    • Create systems to monitor policy change and policy environments.
  • Administrative support – 10%
    • Support cross-country department administration including:
      • Planning and coordination of annual meet-up
      • Coordinating systems and tools such as department dropbox, Google Drive, Salesforce.
      • Promote department communications through monthly e-newsletter and sharing department documents on the intranet.
      • Support logistical needs for department including arranging lodging & flights for interview candidates.
      • Other administrative support as needed.

We are seeking an exceptional professional with 2-3+ year(s) of work experience and ideally a demonstrated passion for international development.  Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience. We are looking for a former policy professional, analyst, economist, management consultant, or lawyer; entrepreneurial and unstructured work experiences are also helpful.
  • East Africa experience. A proven understanding of the political, social, and economic situation in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the region.
  • Leadership experience. Include evidence of how you led a team of people. Remote leadership experience is beneficial.
  • Top-performing academic background (include GPA on your resume). Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Humility. We are looking for passionate professionals who combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service to join our growing family of leaders.
  • Language: Fluency in English. Working proficiency in French and/or Swahili preferred but not required.

Preferred Start Date

Starts modest. However, this is a career-track role with fast raises for performance, paying a meaningful salary for long-term placement in developing nations.
