School-Based Leadership and Teacher Professional Learning in a South African Reform Context

Presented by: Dr. Smangele (Sma) Mkhwanazi,

Department of Education Leadership & Management, University of South Africa

Abstract: The era of transformation in the South African education context has brought about multiple interventions aimed at improving teacher subject knowledge and classroom practices, that is, teacher professional learning. As part of these interventions, school leaders are now constantly put under pressure to play a role in improving teacher professional learning in order to fit into the transformed education context.  An understanding of the roles, practices and behavior of school leaders and how, if at all, they influence the professional knowledge and classroom practices of their teachers is necessary. The author presumes that understanding this relationship between school leadership and teacher professional learning will significantly inform further efforts to influence school leaders in their endeavors to produce high-quality teachers.
