"Professors and Scholars: Networks and Knowledge at the University of Vienna, 1365-1450"

2015 marks the 650th anniversary of the founding of the University of Vienna. Historian Monica Brinzei (History, University of Vienna) will present Nicholas of Dinkelsbühl, one of the main figures of the first generation of professors from this university, as a guide to this new academic milieu. She will demonstrate how the main philosophical genre of the medieval university, commentaries on the Sentences of Peter Lombard, can help us better understand the production of knowledge inside of the University of Vienna. As she compares Viennese commentaries with the scholarly tradition of the University of Paris, the audience will see what was actually new at the new University of Vienna.
