HHH Kevin Gerdes in Croatia, speaking on crisis management

Kevin Gerdes, Director of the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program at the Humphrey School, traveled to Croatia in April to present a paper at the RECIPE and International Crisis Management Conferences in Split on the topic of “Closing the Gap between Private and Public Partners.” Dr. Gerdes' paper used secondary data from US and European scholars as well as interviews with representatives from the MN Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Xcel Energy on critical infrastructure protection planning.  While there, he lectured at the University of Zagreb.

Kevin Gerdes is the Director of the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) and Capstone Programs, and a member of the graduate faculty at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs where he teaches courses on executive leadership, management, and capstone programs. Gerdes previously served as director of the Public and Nonprofit Leadership Center.

Prior to joining the Humphrey School in 2012, Gerdes served for 33 years with the Minnesota National Guard as Commander at the Company, Battalion, and Brigade levels and helped establish Minnesota's "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" program to support soldiers returning from active duty. He culminated his career as Chief of Staff and then was promoted to Brigadier General for the 34th "Red Bull" Division.

Kevin is responsible for the Master of Public Affairs (MPA) overall operations and program management and teaches courses in the MPA degree program. He has also developed a new executive leadership program for mid-career public safety leaders where he is the program director and primary instructor. Gerdes' most recent research work has focused on community leadership and cross-cultural interactions in small-town settings, and on government delivery redesign.
Gerdes holds a bachelor's degree in management from Upper Iowa University, master's degrees in strategic studies from the US Army War College, and a Ed.D. in educational leadership from the University of St Thomas.
