El acompaƱante (The Companion)
Pavel Giroud I 2015 I Fiction I 104 min

This film is a universal tale of struggle against adversity, a drama that takes up the theme of AIDS in the world of amateur boxing.

At the start of the epidemic in the 1980s, the Cuban government took the drastic, although ultimately successful, step of quarantining infected patients in a sanatorium. Part of the approach was to assign a “companion,” in this case, a former world-class boxer who is paired with a veteran of Cuba’s mission to support the Congolese colonial revolution.

$8.00 general admission; $6.00 seniors, students and MSP Film Society members. The majority of the films are in Spanish, subtitled in English. A discussion will follow each film.
