Associate Professor Ryan Allen is spending the Spring semester of 2017 in Sydney, Australia at the University of New South Wales as a Senior Visiting Fellow at the City Futures Research Centre. Along with touring Australia and New Zealand, Ryan has started a research project that focuses on residential segregation patterns in Sydney and Melbourne. While ethnic residential segregation is low in these cities in comparison to many large cities in North America and Western Europe, both Sydney and Melbourne have relatively high levels of residential segregation by religion. Ryan's research documents this phenomenon and raises questions about what effect residential segregation by religion has on land use policies and larger themes related to community cohesion in multicultural societies.
