MPA alum Sandeep Mishra, Mission Director for Delhi & Special Secretary (Urban Development), Government of Delhi, spoke recently on the topic of "Integrated Solid Waste Management," focusing Delhi is doing and planning for managing its municipal solid waste .
Abstract:
Delhi has a population of about 17 million people and it produces about 9000 MT of MSW every day in a geographical area spread over 1483 sq km. We are now planning to manage this entire solid waste scientifically under the Swachh(Clean) Bharat(India) Mission (SBM), the flagship program of the federal government. Presently in Delhi only about 55% of the waste is being processed and the rest goes to the 4 land fill sites. Plan includes segregation at the generation level, 100 % door-to-door collection, transportation to primary/secondary receptacles, recycling, composting, & incineration (through Waste to Energy plants) and setting up facilities for processing construction & demolition waste.
Mr. Mishra joined the public sector in 1993 as Management Trainee in the Steel Authority of India Limited, after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur. He served as the Additional Secretary of Environment in the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and also as Additional Director in the Directorate of Information and Publicity. Prior to that, he served as Private Secretary to Delhi Chief Minister for over eight years. Part of his achievements with the Delhi government was the implementation of the Bhagidari scheme (citizen-government partnership) and the successful organization of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
