Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA) Executive Director

Organization

Founded in 1965, Operation Bootstrap Africa (OBA) is a Minnesota non-profit organization that partners with communities in Tanzania, Kenya, and Madagascar to help them educate their children. Grounded in a "self-help" philosophy, Bootstrap works in partnership with local groups, uses local resources, and follows local priorities to improve access to education.

Today, OBA supports a broad range of East-African educational projects, from school construction to girls' education and post-secondary education. www.bootstrapafrica.org

Position

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility OBA’s staff, programs, expansion, and execution of its mission.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management:
  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve the strategic goals 
  • Actively engage and energize OBA donors, volunteers, board members, event committees
  • Supervise and direct office staff and volunteers
  • Ensure effective systems to track progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board and donors
Fundraising & Communications:
  • Work with staff and board to create and implement a fundraising plan to meet and exceed the annual organizational budget
  • Expand local and national revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations with the goal of creating a stronger brand
  • Develop a legacy giving program 
  • Promote OBA through The Dignity newsletter, year-end letter, brochures, website, video, and social media
  • Maintain communication with donors via email, phone, letters and in person
  • Lead annual trip to Tanzania to visit projects to promote OBA
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration, education, organizational development, or relevant field
  • Five years of management experience with a non-profit or foundation, preferably with an organization with projects in Africa
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds
  • Ability to point to specific examples of having developed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational management skills with ability to manage a 1-2 person staff, evaluate programs, achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing and future board member relationships 
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders 
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with data base management programs
