THE ORGANIZATION

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an independent, non-partisan, federally funded organization established and funded by the U.S. Congress to increase the nation’s capacity to manage international conflict without violence. USIP was founded in 1984 to:
Prevent, mitigate and resolve violent international conflict;
Provide analysis on the root causes of conflict;
Increase peacebuilding capacity, education, tools, and intellectual capital among practitioners and the American public.

SUMMARY

The Program Officer position serves as the senior conflict resolution trainer in the Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding and is responsible for the design and delivery of conflict resolution trainings, the development of materials (simulations and cases) for online courses, and the creation of new partnerships leading to the creation of additional onsite courses and programs. In particular, the PO will help design and implement training content and courses that focus on the needs and competencies for practitioners working in conflict zones. This position will focus on training and instruction particularly related to conflict resolution and peacebuilding topics, including but not restricted to conflict prevention and preventing violent extremism, conflict management and transformation, advising, resilience, and facilitation and dialogue skills.

The Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding is the education and training center of USIP. The Academy is a leader in the field of professional education and training for practitioners in conflict management. Established in 2009, the Academy provides practitioner-oriented education, training, and resources via facilities at USIP’s Washington headquarters, mobile training in conflict zones, and online distance education and training.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as the Academy’s senior conflict resolution trainer, implementing trainings for domestic and international audiences
Develops new conflict resolution content and exercises
Supervises the development of additional curricular materials and course development for the particular topic of instruction or skills development.
Works with the Global Campus to develop content for online courses
Develops new partnerships for onsite programming
Engages domestic and international university audiences and in courses related to conflict resolution and transformation
Develops content to support the Academy’s work in the area of CVE
Contributes to the work of the Academy to evaluate the effectiveness of its programs
Pursues potential funding for training projects and activities
Extended travel overseas required
Provides reports and summaries to the program and Academy leadership, most especially the Director of Curriculum and Training Design and the Vice President

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals of countries listed in a U.S. Collective Defense Arrangement per the Department of State. To see a list of those countries, go to http://www.state.gov/s/l/treaty/collectivedefense/index.htm.
Masters or PhD in education, international education, conflict management or a related field. A doctorate is preferred and extensive field experience is expected.
10 – 15 years of demonstrated experience as an educator and trainer working with a range of ages and professions, including in contexts outside of the United States
In-depth knowledge of and experience in developing monitoring and evaluation tools
The ability to train in a non-English language is required, with French or Arabic strongly preferred.
Ability to write funding proposals and after-action reports.
Experience with engaging practitioners, policymakers and civil society members on international and conflict-related issues.
Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
Excellent administrative skills are required and strong qualities in working with teams.
