The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is looking for a Development Officer whose experience will help fuel our mission. Over the past 40 years, ICF has grown from the dream of two college students to a world-renowned conservation effort to save the world’s cranes and the flyways and habitats they frequent. ICF achieves our mission through the gifts of our generous donors. As our Development Officer, you will educate donors about ICF goals and successes. The Development Officer will solicit gifts to aid in the growth of our conservation efforts.Â

Position Summary:

The Development Officer supports the International Crane Foundation by securing funds and  managing a group of assigned, qualified donors (portfolio), assuring that as many as possible are retained as continuing donors and are upgraded in their giving and involvement. The Development Officer serves as a key member of ICF’s Development Team and works collaboratively with team members in supporting initiatives that deepen the engagement of major gifts prospects and donors with ICF, and elevate major gift activity.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Â
Create individual goals for each assigned donor in the portfolio based on the donor’s history of giving and ICF’s knowledge of that donor’s potential and interest for general support, capital campaigns, ongoing program and project fund raising, and special opportunity strategic gift opportunities, in collaboration with Director of Development and Development Team.
Create a plan for each assigned donor that serves as a foundational communication and marketing plan for each person in the portfolio. Will faithfully and on a timely basis execute that plan so individuals in the portfolio are retained and upgraded through the Moves Management
Work with Development Team to identify and qualify a portfolio of major gift prospects from existing and potential donors and members.
Schedule and conduct a high level of activity, directly and personally engaging with major gift donors and prospects to build relationships with ICF. Expected travel or out-of-office donor contact range from 25% to 50% of average work week, based on geographic caseload assignments and timing of major institutional fundraising activities.
Skillfully present ICF’s case to prospects and donors for philanthropic support and compelling gift opportunities customized for target audience(s). Including asking for the right gift, at the right time, in the right way. Sustain a high level of activity related to asking for gifts.Â
Develop and prepare major gift proposals, in cooperation with grants, program, and communications staff, utilizing both current and planned gift opportunities, to best meet donors’ needs, interests and financial capabilities, including structuring complex or special gift arrangements, as appropriate.
Collaborate with Development Team, discussing major gift prospects and donors, sharing advice and information, strategizing, and coordinating activity surrounding shared prospects and donors.
Help coordinate development efforts across the organization, working closely with Development Team, Program staff, CEO, Sr. Leadership and ICF Board of Directors, as appropriate, to develop and implement strategies related to major gift opportunities, and optimize use of limited resources to insure high impact and results (strong ROI – Return on Investment).
Create weekly reports as required by management that accurately reflect caseload activity and performance.
Support ICF’s recognition for donors, including implementation of gift acknowledgement strategies.
Help plan and implement ongoing communication and stewardship with major gift donors.
Assist in creation and implementation of annual giving strategies.
Track activity within Raiser’s Edge NXT software.
Communicate effectively with groups and individuals in diverse settings using a range of techniques including face to face, telephone, email, written correspondence, public speaking, and meeting facilitation.
Prepare written case statements, event plans, donor plans and talking points for staff as needed for specific donor situations.
Plan and prioritize work effectively, using time and other resources wisely to maximize desired outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, or other field of interest, or relevant combination of education and experience.
Three years’ experience in major gift fundraising or applicable transferable experience that resulted in donations and gifts to the organization for both unrestricted and restricted uses.
Experience with soliciting funds as part of Annual and Capital Campaigns.
Ability to build and maintain relationships with perspective donors, matching the interests and passions of donors.
Excellent verbal communication skills, including speaking clearly and persuasively to individual and groups; listening effectively; responding well to questions from perspective donors, Board Members, staff.
Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write correspondence, reports, case statements and proposals in a clear, concise, logical, and grammatically-correct manner.
Ability to work independently and to establish, monitor, and achieve goals with minimal supervision.
Proven track record of utilizing Moves Management to cultivate and secure gifts.
Attentive to detail and thoroughness.
Valid State driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
Ability and willingness to travel at least 25% of the time, within Wisconsin, domestically, and outside of the U.S. occasionally.
Flexibility to work the number and schedule of hours needed to accomplish regular and ad hoc job responsibilities, including being accessible outside normal business hours.
Demonstrate respect and sensitivity for others; inspire trust; and work with integrity and ethically.
Quickly, effectively, and continually adapt to changes in work environment and duties, processes, and technologies.
Work as a constructive member of a team, including the free sharing of information and technical expertise as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with annual and capital campaigns.  Ability to proficiently use designated software tool such as Raiser’s Edge or related Fund-Raising software.
Experience working in environmental, conservation, or related organizations.

Office environment with a comfortable office climate.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Occasional work in different climates/temperatures when traveling.
