Executive Director

Founded in 2009, Nukanti is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening the social fabric in communities affected by conflict and poverty, using the arts/media, sports and education to engage and empower young people. The 2013 recipient of Beyond Sport’s Sport for Conflict Resolution and a finalist for Peace and Sport’s 2013 NGO of the Year award, Nukanti is an international organization with headquarters in the USA, the UK and Colombia. Our current initiatives are located in Colombia and Morocco, and we have implemented past programs in Brazil, Haiti, Spain, and UK.

The Program Officer will act as a local representative of Nukanti. He/She will be expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, to respect and comply with local laws and customs as well as with the Nukanti’s policies, procedures, and values – at all times and at all in-country venues.

Position Description

The Program Officer is responsible for the on-the-ground supervision and management of Nukanti’s operational and administrative functions. Working in close coordination with the Executive Director, the Program Officer assists in defining the organization's strategic vision, and is accountable for its implementation and the results achieved. She/he must act in the best interests of Nukanti in all contexts, and is responsible for ensuring this culture prevails across the organization’s employees and volunteers.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Program Officer reports to the Executive Director. Working closely with the organization’s Board, global team members and volunteers, the Program Officer's primary responsibilities are as set out below.

The Program Officer will:
  • Supervise and manage on-the-ground operations with our Colombian staff, partners and international volunteers.
  • Serve as Nukanti’s local representative.
  • Assist in identifying funding opportunities and writing grant requests.
  • Assist in collecting program data for evaluation purposes.
  • Write case studies to be distributed to Nukanti's donors and followers.
  • Work closely with local community leaders to assess the needs of the communities we serve and identify gaps in local services for youth; assist in developing program curricula.
  • Collaborate with local partners in developing and implementing programs; negotiate agreements for implementing programs.
  • Identify potential new partnerships, donors, and funders that can help Nukanti achieve its programming goals.
  • Build local and international awareness of Nukanti’s work via online promotion, webpage, social media, etc.
  • Other activities, as requested by Executive Director.

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • A degree in social sciences, international relations, international development, or other related degree pertaining to human rights is an advantage.
  • 2+ years of experience managing human rights, international development and/or civil society projects.
  • Previous experience or understanding of the NGO sector in Latin America.
  • Proven project management skills with experience in managing multiple projects and/or working for an international organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and mentoring skills to work effectively with partners/clients.
  • A track record that demonstrates energy and creativity, and the ability to successfully prioritize and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated success in project planning, financial management, program monitoring, report writing, and identifying and procuring technical assistance. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Experience in data processing (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel), email, and Internet browser software.
