Today, the map of Minnesota is dotted with places that bear French names, which are as Wingerd puts it, “physical reminders of more than one hundred years of the French and Indian encounter.” Going beyond just the French-Indian war, Wingerd cites the ways in which French and Indians shared kinship connections, trade agreements, and land. Her history of the French and Indian hybrid culture and the way it influenced Minnesota through history and today is intricate, taking into account the interests of all who were present in this history. Through Wingerd’s historical construction, we can better understand the French role within this complicated, interconnected history of our region.

A discussion and book signing session will follow the presentation. Refreshments will be provided.
